Meet Franky and Jersey–the current four-legged family members of Furtale’s founder and chief storyteller and the heroes of the My Brave Eye series. While many special dogs came before them who inspired some of Furtale’s stories, (sweet little Ava, Dude, and Bella, who are chasing endless sunshine and butterflies at Rainbow Bridge) Franky and Jersey are here now…
And they’re very excited to tell you how they’ve inspired their human to start on this journey of writing children’s books.
Well, I should probably start since I’m the older one—
Ohmigosh, can I go first? PLEASE? I’m Franky, the one with one brown eye and one blue eye, which my human turned into this whole superpower thing in the My Brave Eye series. I’m basically a mighty warrior trapped in a tiny Pomeranian body! See these freckles on my nose? Battle marks from all my daring adventures! Oh, and I’m definitely the one who taught our human about hugs and kisses—
Excuse me? I believe I was the first love guru in this family. I was here before you.
Well, I perfected the technique! My size makes me more huggable.
I literally taught her that love isn’t just about cooking great meals and making sure everyone had enough to eat! Can you believe she never hugged her parents or said “I love you” to them? Not once in her life! She’s got a huge family with eight siblings, and not a single hug between them—
Yeah, but that’s just how they showed love where she grew up. Through food, through actions—making sure everyone was taken care of. It wasn’t about hugs and words; it was just… understood.
True. But love is something you feel too. Sometimes that means cuddles.
And snuggles! And nose kisses! And surprise hug attacks!
Exactly. After all, she chose not to have human kids so she could dedicate all her love to us. It was only fair that we helped her see love in all its forms—including the warm, fuzzy, slightly slobbery kind. I guess that’s why she’s so inspired to write these books. We’ve taught her so much about life.
Like how I taught her that work isn’t everything? Remember how she used to stay glued to that laptop?
Until you started dropping tennis balls in her lap every five minutes. And yapping. And whining. Nonstop.
Hey, it’s my nature to yap!
And I taught her about patience—especially when a certain tiny sister of mine is bouncing off the walls! You know what? Our human realized that everything she was learning from us—patience, balance, unconditional love, seeing the bright side of things because of your blue and brown eye—these are exactly what parents want to teach their kids!
Oh yeah! Like that time I was scared of the big couch but kept trying anyway? She thought, “If a tiny pom can learn to be brave, imagine how this could help kids face their fears!”
And when she saw how I accept all your unique quirks—
Ooh, what quirks? I’m PERFECT!
Says the pom who chews ears and turns everything into fetch—
Those are TALENTS! OH! Is that a tennis ball?!
THIS. This right here is exactly what made our human realize these stories needed to be told. If I can handle this bundle of endless energy with patience and love, imagine what kids could learn about kindness and protecting others!
That’s when she had her “tennis ball moment”—you know, when inspiration hits you right on the head!
And that’s how Furtale Books was born! Together with our angel siblings, we’re sharing tales about friendship, courage, kindness, gratitude, respect, loyalty, acceptance, and finding joy even when life feels stormy.
So yeah…turns out, we make pretty great teachers!
